Hot off the press: the latest TPP Antibiotic Atlas has arrived!
The Antibiotic Atlas, produced by TPP Alberta, provides an overview of provincial antibiotic use in the community. TPP Alberta continues to support the efforts against antimicrobial resistance through monitoring and by producing and sharing the second iteration of this report.
Enhancements to the atlas this year include:
Age and sex standardized rates in tables and maps
Additional trend data
Breakdown of data by prescriber type
A new section examining patients and prescriptions by physician specialty
Detailed maps for Calgary and Edmonton showing neighbourhood boundaries.
Highlights
In 2019, over 2.5 million antibiotic prescriptions were dispensed to over 1.4 million Albertans. The majority of these prescriptions, 82 per cent, were from physicians. For most age bands, females received more prescriptions than males. Amoxicillin continues to be the most prescribed ingredient, followed by azithromycin, cephalexin and amoxicillin/clavulanate. Looking at the top 10 antibiotics dispensed, the average number of treatment days by agent was more than seven, except for azithromycin (just over six days of treatment).
